SFTS Blog Hop: three little words

Blog hop
Jenn is doing another fun blog hop, what three words would you use to describe your horse?
I love words and I love my horse so choosing is going to be hard.

Adorable.
Bath time horse
Squeee!
Serendipitous.
Charles Owen
Always a smirk
Quintessential.
Autumn photo shoot
Dream horse
This horse is the answer to prayers I didn't know I had.  He has rekindled long dormant dreams.  He is sometimes cantankerous, he sometimes doesn't want caught or brushed or kissed, but is always ready to listen.  He listens when I ride, when I cry, when I laugh.  He is always ready for a hug.  He thinks, he contemplates, he is genuine.  Yes, I know I'm totally anthropomorphizing, but we are all horse people here and that is what we do.  I look at courses that intimidated in the past and I dream of doing them with him, we are going places.  If I'm dreaming don't wake me up.

Post 201

Woah how did that happen?  My last post was number 200, I'm amazed.  I have loved getting to know all of you amazing bloggers and look forward to the adventures of the next two hundred posts!
Because funny.
Things I hope the next two hundred posts include?  Shows and satin!  Because P-Diddy demands that he has some beribboned photos, I know I shouldn't get my hopes too high since it is still his first year off the track, but one of my favorite quotes is:
*the nerd in me really takes issue with this.
The first time I felt him aim at the moon
I'm a dreamer, always have been, hopefully always will be.  I love getting to share my dreams here, along with the struggle to make them a reality.  While the frigid wind of winter blows through the eves I find myself dreaming of the thrill of the center-line salute, the satisfaction of nailing the strides in that triple combo, and the euphoria felt upon the completion of cross country.  That snug thump from pulling your boots on, the fight to contain every fly away wisp of red hair in my hairnet, the pull and snap of the electrical tape as I boot up my partner.  My heart beating in my throat in anticipation, and the sudden clarity and calm as we come out of the start box.  The feel of my wool coat and silk stock tie encouraging my shoulders back and chin up.  Getting up before the sun for an early groom session and walk about before the mundane tasks of stall cleaning and bucket scrubbing.  All these things and more I hope will litter the contents of my next 200 posts.  Where will we be, what will we be doing?  So much can and will happen and I am giddy with the excitement of seeing what is around the bend.  I will do my best to find the joy in each step of the way.
Never stop exploring.  (Checking out Sedona, AZ)

Years End

Nope I don't have a polished recap post for you, I don't even have a polished recap video.  What I do have is an overall joyful year.  Yes bad stuff happened, but this is real life and shit happens.  I am looking forward to the new year and new adventures.  The hubby and I had an impromptu goal setting session and our number one goal is financial stability.  Hah, hard to do with horses, but doable.  Really as soon as a hospital realizes how awesome I am and hires me we will be well on our way.
I guess this doesn't equal magic money
What does financial stability look like to us?  Bills paid on time every time.  Big hay stacks.  Regular car maintenance.  Lessons/horse shows (lucky for me the Hubby wants this to happen).  Racehorse stuff.  Savings for a vacation.
Oh hey that is me at an event
With some restructuring and more strategic hard work these things are totally doable.   I am looking forward to the challenge and can't wait for more adventures.
Maybe Prisoner and I can make an appearance in the next Jimmy Wofford book
More jumps like this

Posing at Disneyland with my step sister...no joke

Ocean selfie, feel the love
Need some music to listen to?  Check out The Cab, they have lots fun upbeat songs.

Autumn Sunsets

All a y'all know I'm obsessed with sunsets (and sunrises).  Most of all sunsets in the fall.  Over at the 100 acres sunsets reign supreme.
Be still my heart
I'm not usually at the barn where Prisoner lives at dusk, but last week we had a girls night photoshoot.  It was loads of fun and even involved the unsafe practice of riding bareback sans helmet...#gottalivealittle.
Rolly poly pony boy
He was actually pretty comfy for a thoroughbred.  In fact I think that some bareback rides with a helmet are in order for some real OTTB shenanigans.
He was ready to be done at this point
Ellie Cook was photographer (Alyssa also took some) and edited the heck out of them.  Like we were pretty much out of light and she made them downright glow, kudos!
The darkest of them and still awesome
At one point P-diddy was all, 'what is this nonsense?' and started rapidly backing up, Alyssa jumped in and led him around for a second.  He totally chilled out, racehorses are very comfortable being led around while ridden as it happens everyday at the track.
One of my favorites
As long as we walked around he was fine, standing still was the real challenge.  I was so impressed with him though, as we were in a totally new part of the property for him.  Not one spook, thank you track style desensitization.
Dreaming of the future
The gnats were also out in full force so the usual standing next to him and snuggling was out as he kept getting me with his slinging head.
Awkward pose is awkward
Seriously he could not keep still.
Who is crazier?  (all those white specks are bugs)
I do love me some hunky OTTB body though.
Um hello event horse
Lets just say he really feels like mine now that we have awesome 'a girl and her horse' photos.  He is even starting to shed some of his shell and enjoy loves.  The last two days when I've ridden him there has been a certain friendship vibe.  That silent communication while I tack him up, the same page during the ride, lingering when I turn him out.  His sheer talent has been thrilling, but the relationship is starting to materialize.
My other favorite
My blaze face dapple bay boy with the moostache.  Those things that have been the mist of dreams are starting to condense and become visible.  It almost scares me, the passion I feel.  I've had dreams with other horses and they crumbled, I am dredging up the courage to keep looking towards the future.  In a life that is often difficult (by first world standards) this horse is a beacon illuminating the steps I take.

SFTS: Why do I do what I do?

Jenn over at STFS has a great blog hop going, so I thought I would join in.

Her question is why do you participate in your particular riding discipline?

Whew, this could be a long response.  I call myself an eventer, but I also compete at dressage shows.  In fact, I'm sure I've ridden at more dressage shows than events.  I've dabbled in hunters and jumpers, and while I enjoy them, they are not my passion.  I used to do endurance and could do it again (that's the thing about phobias they don't make sense, I'm scared of trail rides, but love endurance on arabs). Oh yeah I do racetrack stuff too.

Breaking up text with random P-diddy photos from the other day
To be honest I'm good at dressage, I enjoy it, I understand it, I can pass that understanding to the horse.  When I was younger (early to mid teens) I was desperate to jump, but dealing with fear which I finally learned to control.  In the interim my trainer was desperate for me to go to young riders for Dressage.  Thing is that takes a lot of money and I certainly didn't have access to a horse that could be good enough.  God bless that trainer, aka Dad number 2.  He didn't bring up young riders again once he knew there really wasn't a way, instead he had me riding practically every horse in the barn at least once.  I would warm up and cool down his fancy client horses, I groomed, I did farm chores, I learned.  He made me the most well rounded horse person he could, he taught me to give shots, drive a trailer, drive a tractor, make jump courses and xc courses, run sprinklers, fix stuff.
Yep I know how to do this
It was incredible.  The whole time I was riding dressage on every type of horse though, the jumps were calling.  The feeling of a gallop across a field was calling.  I had a new horse named Genevieve, we were training her and I was feeling confident so we started jumping.  At the same time an acquaintance (who became an incredible friend) had me start helping her get her horses fit after winter.  Those horses were Rev (heart horse) and Venture (horse I took Prelim a little over two years later).
Prelim drop into water
Backing up a step here, I had been making plans to be a working student (on the east coast) sometime after highschool, I kept telling myself that I would remake myself then, I would jump then, I was too embarrassed for the people who knew me to watch my hopeful transformation at home.  But the best laid plans.
Really cool shot by mom!
Those three horses taught me to love the jumps and the cross country.  I had lusted after it, but I finally learned how to make it a strong and lasting love.  I gained skills and confidence.  Before I knew it I was traveling around to events and doing well, all from home.  I had transformed my horse riding identity right in front of the people I knew best, and the best part for me to realize was that they were all rooting me on the whole time.  By the time I did go back east and do the working student thing I was ready.
Another by mom, gah I love this horse
I warned you that might get long.

I guess what I do or who I am is the eventing girl that does dressage and rides mostly green or problem horses.  What a title.  What I'm looking forward to now is getting Prisoner and Diva going enough that I can go Prelim again.  And then I want to go Intermediate.  Then Advanced.  Call me crazy but my mid-twenties self still dreams of the olympics/WEG.  I know the chance is slim to none, but it is a great carrot to dangle out there and keep me motivated.
P-diddy working his booty. pc: mom
That was all the back story on why I do what I do.  The real reason, the visceral reason, the reason I keep coming back?  For the feel when it all goes right.  The hair blowing, toe curling, stomach churning, spine tingling, face splitting smiling, eyes watering, joy inspiring feeling that happens when you roll around the course.
Thankful after Prelim XC

Musical Interlude

Turns out it wasn't my weekend to show (no worries P-diddy didn't even get to the show and is perfectly fine)...and typing is a bit difficult so here is a blog hop I hadn't published yet...
Alyssa over at fourmaresnomoney wrote about songs for each of her horses.  I wanted to follow suit, but I am more of song for each mood or riding type.  So I will give you some of my riding and riding dreams soundtrack.

1.  When the day needs some epicness/ everytime I go cross country.

you're welcome I found the song with horse video

If I was going to pick a horse for that song it would be Rio, he thought he was a gangsta.
In a KOC clinic (2009) (saddle pad from The Fork HT in 2006)
2. Song when a horse's owner has upset me

There are two horses that embody that.

Rev
Cowboy
3. When I swing up on a race horse

Ok so that video has a conglomerate of songs, but the first one 'Danger Zone' is one of my favorites.  Need a great movie to watch, check out Top Gun, one of my faves (Tom Cruise before he was creepy) it has: fast planes, sweaty guys playing volleyball, a little romance, some sad, lots of happy, fast planes, good ending.
Sweaty horse

4. Riding some kick ass dressage
I really like Bond, they have great 'rock classical'

5. Battling inner fear deamons
This is a pretty new song, but it really captures the feeling of conquering something

Also check out more of Lindsey Stirling's music, love it all!

5. More cross country songs. (mostly politically incorrect)

Start at 1:32 for the part for inspired drop jump riding

um yeah

I may or may not know all the words....pretty much most Eminem songs get me pumped.  Also check out Not Afraid.

6. Other
When I'm in my house cleaning or editing videos (horses of course) or cooking etc. I'm obsessed with Bastille, Imogen Heap, Ginny Blackmore, and The GooGoo Dolls.  So really these are the songs I day dream to.

Rekindling the fire

Hah, that ought to get some fun traffic.  What I'm talking about is my renewed ability to day dream.  Old day dreams that I haven't had in forever.  Diva started me on the right track with her affable personality last fall and all the fun I had with her.  Her 'tude this spring was a bit of a slap in the face (thank goodness she is her pleasant self again).  After last night with the one and only P-diddy I was noticing myself driving down the road looking at one ton hay bales as potential jumps.  Am I nuts?  Most likely yes, but that was a regular dream of mine years back and after a string of crummy horses and bad experiences with owners it disappeared into the mist.  It really caught me off guard feeling that way again, I don't think I have quit smiling since last night.  We hauled over to jump night at S's big arena for Prisoner's first field trip, he was perfect.
Hello color parade

So handsome

Cob bridle, pony bonnet

All the loves

Figuring out the poles

Wheeeeee!

Giving leads through the water (we had an epic rainstorm).  Don't know if my grin could get any bigger!

All the dapples

THANK YOU Alyssa for documenting the magic night!
